Four notes. A whole orchestra.

Follow the short opening rhythm as it travels through the orchestra. The pauses are part of the drama: watch the instruments fall quiet before the music surges back.

Recognize the rhythm: Three short notes lead into a longer one. Listen for its returns in different parts.
Follow the changing colours: Woodwinds, horns, trumpets, timpani, and strings each have their own lanes.
Notice the breathing space: The first oboe briefly takes the spotlight in a free, unhurried solo.

Behind the music

Beethoven had already been struggling with his hearing for years when he completed the Fifth in 1808. He worked on it alongside the very different, pastoral Sixth Symphony. Both were first performed at the same Vienna concert that December.

This performance includes the exposition repeat. The bar counter follows the written score, returning to bar 1 for the repeat. Eighteen lanes represent orchestral parts; a string lane can stand for a whole section of players.
